Choosing the Correct Protection

When choosing the correct ear protection, it is important to note both the protection level offered by the product and the environment they will be used in.  If for example a product has a decibel rating of 37 dB within a working environment of 110dB, the user will experience a safer noise level of 73 dB (110 dB - 37 dB).  

The Decibel Scale

The decibel scale is logarithmic. Noise exposure of 95 dB is perceived as twice as loud as 85 dB. Measured physically, this difference actually shows a tenfold increase of sound pressure.

Long-term, daily exposure to 85 dB is generally considered to result in hearing loss. Daily exposure of 8 hours at 85 dB is just as dangerous as 88 dB for 4 hours..
